| 湖南人的“独立之根性”是湖湘文化精神特质的一种人格化表现。这种“独立之根性”使以政治为本位、以“经世致用”与“原道”作为人生的基本的行为主导方式的湖湘士人特别重志节，特别重独辟蹊径，特别重天下苍生，特别重“独立不迁”、“深固难徙”，而表现出一种“宏识孤怀”、“敢为天下先”的“原道”的襟怀，乃至“殉道”的英雄气。五四时期的湖南报人，在特有的历史文化环境中，最充分地表现了这种“独立之根性”，最充分地表现了一种探索大本大源的血性、刚性和智性。具体主要表现在两个方面：一是刚正不阿的人格精神，一是独辟蹊径的求索精神。 |

| The fundamental characteristics of independence in the people of Hunan is the manifestation of personification in the specific property of the spirit of Huxiang Culture. This fundamental characteristics of independence is that intellectuals in Hunan, who regard politics as their fundamental importance and “the spirit of pursuit of practical use in doing things” and seeking truth as their leading way of life, pay special attention to their aspiration and reputation, to the spirit of bringing forth new ideas, to the people around the world and to rooting in their own land. In this way, they have expressed their heroic spirit of having the independent ideas of seeking truth, of daring to do whatever others have never done before and even of sacrificing themselves in mind. Newspapermen in Hunan during the May 4th Movement expressed fully this kind of fundamental characteristics of independence in the specific environment of the historical culture. The main expressions were as the followings: the spirit of personification which was upright and never stooping flattery and the spirit of craving for knowledge by which they could bring forth new ideas. |
