在督办镇江军务期间，冯子材总结出了一套以弱敌强的积极防御战术，并将其灵活地运用于中法战争中，一举取得镇南关大捷。事实证明：冯子材的积极防御战术在近代中国反抗外敌入侵的战争中，弥补了清军在武器装备和军事素质方面的诸多劣势，是独步于时代的先进军事成果。

英文摘要:

While supervising and handling with the military affairs of Zhenjiang, Feng Zicai summarized a set of positive defense techniques and elastically put them to use in the anti-France war, leading to the great victory in Zhennanguan. Facts proved that in wars against foreign invasions in modern history, Feng Zicais positive defense techniques compensated for the many inferiorities in Qing armys military equipment and qualities. They turned out to be advanced military achievements which took the lead in that era.
