Abstract:Metalanguage is the language that describes language; to put it simply, it refers the terminology used for describing and analyzing language. Metalinguistic competence refers to the ability to think of and reflect on the features and function of language. Metalanguage and metalinguistic competence are often neglected because of their traditional linkage with grammatical teaching, especially in the current of communicative language teaching. However, the development of metalinguistic competence is necessary and significant because of its contribution to L2 competence and critical thinking. In order for it to develop, emphasis should be given to native language education, lead-in of metalinguistic activities and teachers’ metalinguistic competence.
