Shen Quan was a calligrapher enjoying a high reputation among the schools of calligraphic history study in the early Qing Dynasty. He played a vital role in the widespread of Dong Qichangs calligraphic style during the reign of the Emperor Kangxi and the formation of the flourishing study of calligraphic history in the early Qing Dynasty. Shen Quan owed his profound influences to his academician status, his calligraphic accomplishments, and his geographic advantages. In addition, Shen Quan's influences over calligraphic history study in the early Qing Dynasty were also shown in the following two aspects: exerting subtle influences over the Emperor Kangxi's calligraphic thoughts, and further establishing the independent status of the academician calligraphers.
