The essence of Yan Fus thoughts of translating Western terms is to render them by integrating Chinese and Western academics, which is developed from the method of Geyi in translating Buddhist sutra. This method of integrating Chinese and Western academics in translation is also in line with Yan Fus translation standards which give priority to “expressiveness”, so it is very effective in learning from the West in the early stage of introducing Western academics, however the method also reveals many historical limitations due to its over-reliance on local traditional academics.
