Abstract:Cyber catchwords, which result from the popularity of internet, are featured in their formation as follows: 1) analogy and homophone as a predominant formation means; 2) emergence in large numbers of such new types of lexical terms as rapid growth of foreign compound words, and 3) mixture of pinyin, letters and figures. This research concludes that the prevalence of cyber catchwords can be contributed to the copy and spread of linguistic memes. The variability and the trendiness function as the underlying causes for the growing popularity of such catchwords.
