Abstract:The English basic taste term “sweet” is a typical polysemy, and its polysemization is closely related to the cognitive construal of the conceptulizer. With the construal of metaphor, “sweet” is polysemized across the domains, such as the polysemization from the domain of gustatory perception to the domain of auditory perception, visual perception, mental perception, and so on. With the construal of profiling, “sweet” is polysemized within the same domain, such as the polysemization from the descriptive sense to the substantive sense within the domain of mental perception.
